If you are reading this, chances are you care deeply about people in your community who are hungry...

The Salvation Army is transforming the way we think about feeding the hungry. That’s why we’ve launched and implemented an initiative  called Feeding Families for Life, Fighting Hunger The Healthy Way. This program supports the expansion of healthy eating programs across The Salvation Army Western PA Division.

With your help, we will continue to impact those facing food insecurity through:

  • Providing fresh produce, lean proteins, and other healthy meal options at our food pantries, soup kitchens and feedings programs.
  • Educating families and individuals about how to budget and afford healthy food choices for everyday meal planning.
  • Providing healthier, fresh options for snacks, meals, and food distributed to families and individuals.
  • Growing Community Gardens funded by Heinz Endowments, creating a space for families to benefit from fresh foods, recipe cards, and a place to discover new healthy options.
  • Providing children with healthy options over the weekend through our Love In A Backpack program. Love in a Backpack also provides healthy meals for children during the weekdays over the summer when school is not in session.

“Oftentimes, the families we serve feel restricted to cheaper food options, which includes highly processed foods and items that lack the nutrients we all need to be at our best,” The Salvation Army Western PA Divisional Commander Major Gregory Hartshorn said. “Feeding Families for Life both feeds and educates local communities through Salvation Army programs and food pantries, leaving a long-term impact on both the physical and mental health of those served.” -Major Gregory Hartshorn, Divisional Commander, The Salvation Army of Western PA
